Math in the Wild: Nature, Numbers, and Field Science

Math is everywhere in nature! This enhanced program integrates outdoor learning experiences with intermediate and middle school math curriculum, including algebra, geometry, trigonometry, and field sciences, to create a comprehensive and engaging experience while immersed in natural spaces. How can nature-based math benefit learning? Firstly, it immerses students into meaningful experiences that will not only enhance students' math and science skills but also deepen their understanding of biology, chemistry, and physics in a real-world context! Secondly, nature-based math can foster a deeper appreciation for the natural world and its interconnectedness and developing personal identity with place. Thirdly, engaging with nature can promote complex development of motor skills, observation skills, and problem-solving abilities. Through hands-on exploration, students are able to start developing an appreciation and understanding of mathematical concepts such as number sense, basic geometry, and spatial awareness. Finally, according to Dr. Mariana Brussoni at the Brussoni Lab (UBC), the physical, social, emotional, cognitive, and health benefits of nature-based learning in children are incredibly important investments in our future. Nature offers healing and hope for all of us; the deep appreciation ensures that humans continue nurturing and protecting the Earth through stewardship, environmentalism, and sustainable living practices.
